Guardian: Solar panels could be installed on offices

Solar panels could be installed on council offices in a scheme aimed at saving taxpayers' money and cutting the authority's carbon footprint.

A proposal set to be discussed by Epping Forest's District Council's cabinet sets an installation cost of £79,689, which would be paid back in eight years through projected savings and revenue.

The authority estimates it would cut its carbon footprint by around 23,000 kgs per year.

What are solar panels?

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) convert daylight into electrical current that can be used to power your appliances.

Solar PV produce their energy from daylight, not sunlight, so energy is still able to produce electricity on a cloudy day.

The solar panels should last 25 years or more. There are several benefits to using Solar PV, such as it being able to cut your electricity bills as well as your carbon footprint as you will be using renewable energy. Another benefit is that you get paid for the electricity that you generate.
