The Environmental Agency have only been notified by 152 organisations that they are fully compliant with the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), which has risen compared to the 32 figure at the end of may. However, with the deadline only three months away, there are growing concerns that many companies are going to leave it until last minute or not comply in time resulting in large fines. If an eligible business doesn't comply by the 5th December deadline, the fine for non compliance can be up to £50,000.
It can take an assessor up to three months to complete an audit, leaving little time to start the progress of compliance. The agency is urging those that are yet to comply, to start making the necessary arrangements for ESOS immediately, in order to avoid the hefty fines for non-compliance.
The Head of the Energy Managers Association (EMA), Lord Redesdale, has suggested that if a late surge materialises for compliance, there may be a lot of capacity and quality issues from an assessment perspective.
With no time to spare, companies are urged to begin their audits with no delay, as the threat of financial penalties is very real.
